On January 15, 2020, the Campbell County Airport Board voted to change the name of the airport from the Gillette-Campbell County Airport to the Northeast Wyoming Regional Airport. On January 21, 2020, the Campbell County Board of Commissioners voted, and passed Resolution 2030 officially changing the name of the Gillette-Campbell County Airport to the Northeast Wyoming Regional Airport and authorize all necessary actions required to effectuate the name change with an effective date of January 21, 2020.
Airport Director Jay Lundell attributes the necessity to change the airport’s name because the airport serves the commercial air service and general aviation needs for a large portion of northeastern Wyoming, western South Dakota, and southeastern Montana and truly is a regional airport.
The name change has the support of the Campbell County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Energy Capital Economic Development and the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce. Some of their comments were the marketing efforts of the airport have accomplished a major increase in passenger enplanements. The state-wide capacity purchase agreement between WYDOT Aeronautics and SkyWest Airlines is another leading factor.
The name change will draw in new passengers and will help prevent leakage to other airports. The name change is a good representation of the area the airport actually serves.
